Carrot Chess Set

Individual Project · 2020 · Product Design

It was the first project that we did after the Covid-19 pandemic breakout. The primary aim was to provide people a way of entertaining themselves, by self-producing a chess set and then by playing it with family/friends/roommates/etc. I also prepared a manual so users should be able to construct their chess set following the instructions.

Design Process

  • Material exploration: I've tried different forms with dough (made with water, flour, and salt), a bar of soap, and carrots.

  • Form explorations: After drawing designs and trying different forms with different materials I found out it is more easy to carve out something rather than creating it from scratch.

  • Finalizing designs of pieces: With each experiment, I simplified the design more. Because I observed each cut results in different forms when the carrot dries up. After 2 weeks they completely dries and become rock solid. Then I varnished it for a glossy look. Also, I died the cutting board with purple carrots.

  • Creating a digital manual: I created a digital manual explaining how to do pieces and a few tips about the process. I drew illustrations for each piece. The best thing about this set is it will be special to one doing it because it involves a natural process that makes each piece unique. However, pieces will be recognizable due to basic differences like their length and size.

Journey

Journey is an app that helps you plan travel activities and find compatible travelers that share the same interests as you for each activity.

It is designed for people who want to travel but not alone, or who want to meet new people wherever they go.

My Role & Contribution

I encouraged each member to work on each part of the project, most of the time arranged our weekly meeting time and submitted weekly assignments after checking them. Throughout this project, I contributed to:

  • Conducting field research and user interview

  • Crafting user persona and journey map

  • Ideating with different ideation techniques (Telephone, Crazy 8, Opposite Day, Bodystorming (Roleplaying), How Might We?)

  • Low and high-fidelity wireframes and prototype creation

  • UI element design

  • Branding, and logo development

Project Process

01 · Empathize

We conducted extensive research that yielded some insights. Then, we conducted a SWOT analysis of leading travel apps, offering insights into industry strengths and weaknesses.

02 · Define

We conducted user research with six travelers of varying ages, backgrounds, and preferences, We found out key insights about the varied needs and challenges that travelers experience, which guided our design decisions:

We identified our problem:

People do not want to travel alone because it can be challenging and they cannot share the moment, but they struggle to find a compatible travel mate.

03 · Ideate & 04 · Prototype

We used different ideation techniques to brainstorm design ideas. We used these methods:

  • "Telephone" to pass an idea through a group and modify it each round

  • "Crazy 8" to sketch eight distinct ideas in eight minutes

  • "Opposite Day" to create opposing ideas for HMW statements

  • "Bodystorming" to empathize with our target group

Ideate & Prototype

05 · Product

After making three user test after each revisions we finalized our UX and UI design. Also we found our app name "Journey" emphasizing having trip together and choose colors considering our aims.

Orange to capture the fun and the excitement of travelling with new people.

Teal to evoke peace and comfort highlighting our app's reliability and makes our users feel safe.

  • Users select the country, city, and dates of their travel.

  • Then, they choose travel purposes. It also helps narrow down options with keywords.

  • They can see the activities/locations of their choices and details. Then, users can add these places to their plans.

*I mostly worked on creating plan pages.

Creating a detailed travel plan

  • Users can add travel mates while adding activities whether for the entire trip or just part of the day. or at the end of their plan.

  • They can look at people's profiles and make their own choices.

  • After the trip, they can write references to each other and give points.

Finding travel mates

  • Previous, current, and upcoming plans are displayed on the plan screen so that the users can easily access their plans.

  • They can make changes, invite travel buddies, and make comments during and after their vacation.
